Following the success of the 2024 workshop held at Penn, we invite you to the 2025 edition of the the Northeast Systems and Control Workshop (NESCW), hosted at Columbia University in the City of New York. Please consider submitting a poster or talk. Details of the event including registration for the event can be found below.

News & Updates:
Post-workshop social event: The Baylander – Google maps link here.
Confirmed speakers: Our list of speakers is finalized and available here.
Posters: A list of all accepted posters can be found here.
Schedule finalized – see below.

Arrival on campus:
The workshop will take place in the Davis Auditorium in the Shapiro Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research (CEPSR) building. Please enter campus via the 116th St and Broadway entrance, or 116th St and Amsterdam Entrance. Once on campus head north to get to the CEPSR building – a campus map is available here and Google maps link here.

Getting to campus:
The easiest way to get to the Columbia campus is via public transport. The 1 train connects Penn Station with the main entrance and runs 24/7. We do not have any designated parking, if you plan to drive, you will need to make your own parking arrangements. Please note that NYC parking is notoriously expensive. There may be limited free on-street parking on Morningside Drive (2 mins from campus) but there are no guarantees.

Registration

Registration is free for everybody. A light breakfast, lunch, and refreshments will be provided. We ask that all participants register in advance for the event. Due to current campus security measures, all participants must register by April 25th. Please click here to register.

Location

Columbia is situated in Morningside Heights on the Upper West Side of New York City. The campus has its own subway stop on the 1 line at 116th St. and Broadway. The workshop will be held in the Shapiro CEPSR building, campus map can be found here.

About

The Northeast Systems and Control Workshop (NECSW) aims to provide a forum for systems and control researchers in the Northeast to present their work, and interact with local graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty in an informal and collaborative setting.  To promote interaction and community building NESCW will be hosted by a different institution in the Northeast region every year. Any member of the systems and control community in the Northeast region (broadly interpreted) is welcome to participate.

Contributed Talk and Posters

There will be four oral sessions, each lasting one hour and composed of 4x15min talks, for a total of 16 talks. Institutions that have hosted, or that sign on as host institutions for future workshops are guaranteed at least one speaking slot for a graduate student or postdoc—the remaining speaking slots will be allocated by the host institution so as to ensure equal representation of participating institutions.  As such, it’s recommended that institutions nominate speakers who haven’t given a NESCW talk before.  There will be no limits on posters beyond venue capacity constraints. All talks and poster presentations are by students and postdoctoral scholars, with the goal of providing visibility to young researchers.

The list of speakers is now available here and posters here.

Lab Tours

We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Columbia campus and showing you around two of our labs:

  • Columbia Plasma-Physics Lab: Did you know that Columbia has it’s own tokamak fusion reactor named HBT-EP? Columbia faculty and students use HBT-EP to demonstrate the feasibility of beam-stabilization through feedback control. Come and take a look!
  • Formula SAE: Come and see the electrical vehicles that Columbia EE&ME students build and race at competitions throughout the US.
